Before I get into the ideas, let me briefly tell you how I'm going to organize them. I will start with the most popular monetization methods and gradually narrow down the list. So if you're already familiar with the basics of blogging, you might be able to skip the first few tips. Otherwise, start over!

1. Promote products through affiliate marketing

Let's start with one of the biggest sources of income for bloggers... which regular people are often unfamiliar with:

affiliate marketing.

With affiliate marketing, you get paid to post links or otherwise recommend products or services if someone buys the product as a result of a click away from your site. When someone buys after visiting your site, you get either a percentage or a fixed commission.

For example, you can write a blog post reviewing a product and get paid if someone buys the product as a result of your review. You can also always curate or mention multiple products at the same time. The important thing here is that the customer still gets the same price, whether they buy something through a referral from a partner or directly from the seller.

So how can you find these partnership opportunities?

One way is to look for a partner link in the footers of the company's websites. A good percentage of businesses have such links and you can find out about their affiliate program.

Another way is to register in an affiliate network (a set of affiliate programs).

2. Use Google AdSense or YAN Ads

I'm giving Google AdSense and YAN a separate category because it's one of the most popular and easiest ways to start monetizing your blog. I'm assuming you're familiar with what YAN and AdSense ads look like.

To get these ads on your site, all you have to do is sign up for AdSense and add the ad code to your site. Or register in the Yandex Advertising Network and also add an advertising code to your site.

Then Google and Yandex will show ads that are relevant to your content and your visitors. And you will get paid if someone clicks on your ad (known as cost per click) or even if someone just views your ad (known as cost per impression).

3. Accept sponsored messages from companies

Did you know that there are many companies that will pay you money just for writing a post about them? Such posts are called sponsored posts. And if your blog gets decent traffic, many companies will pay for the privilege of sponsoring a post. This could be one of your main strategies on your way to learning how to make money blogging.

One way to find sponsors for your posts is to use a network like Tapinfluence. But honestly, the best way to attract these opportunities is to create a page on your own website that advertises your traffic and sponsored post rates. This is how advertisers can find you. And trust me, sponsors are always looking for new opportunities!

Keep in mind: it is recommended (and sometimes required by law) to clearly indicate when a publication is sponsored.

4. Use Other Display Networks

AdSense and YAN are technically Display Networks. But since they are very popular, I gave them a separate category. However, AdSense and YAN are not the only options. There are plenty of other networks where all you have to do is add code to your site and start showing ads. Here are some good options: - Media.net - Criteo - Monometric

  • media.net.
  • Criteo.
  • Monometric.

5. Sell ads directly to advertisers

YAN/AdSense and other display ad networks find ads for you so you can learn how to make money blogging without lifting a finger. But in return… they take a fraction of what the advertisers pay you.

So one way to potentially make more money and have more control over the ads on your site is to eliminate the middleman. That is, directly sell ads to advertisers.

As with sponsored posts, the best way to tap into these opportunities is to create an ad page on your site that lists details about your traffic (including Yandex Metrics and Google Analytics screenshots). You can also try to contact companies in your niche beforehand.

And once you get a few ads, there are plenty of WordPress plugins to help you manage them. Here are some of them:

  • AdRotate.
  • Advertising plugin Pro.

6. Sell a digital product like an e-book

Speaking of cutting out the middlemen…instead of solely relying on affiliate marketing to sell other people's products, you can create your own digital product that you sell to your audience. Although this requires some upfront work, it is actually quite a popular way to make money from your blog.

Try to think of a product you could create based on your blog theme. Then sell this product to your readers!

7. Become a freelance blogger

If you already enjoy blogging, you can use your own blog as one big advertisement to attract customers who are willing to pay you to blog. It's actually a pretty solid way to make a living. The best way to do this? Create a page "hire me“. Then, if someone likes your work, they know exactly how to contact you.

8. Create an e-course

Similar to creating a digital product such as an e-book, launching your own e-course is another popular blog monetization method. Again, think about what you're an expert in... and offer a course to your readers. You can also always create a course based on your blog content and earn money that way.

9. Launch a membership site

The latest form of e-books and online courses is running a full membership site. With a membership site, your readers pay monthly to access the full information on your blog (community). To see an example of this in action, visit the Digital Marketer Labs website.

10. Charge people to read your articles

I know… this seems like a pretty far-fetched way to make money blogging. Charging people just to read all of your articles?! No one will ever pay...right?

Well, it depends on your niche. I would not recommend this method for most sites. But some bloggers have actually had success using this method.

Readers can read a limited number of posts for free. But after that, they have to pay to continue reading. Again, not for everyone. But if you have detailed content that people love to read, this might be a viable approach.

11. Create a podcast

As much as people love reading your blog posts, they don't always have time to watch and listen to the words on the screen. So why not connect with them on another medium with an audio podcast? Nowadays, podcasting is booming and many bloggers are joining it.

12. Accept donations

Don't like selling products or advertising? You can always just ask for donations! This is what many bloggers do in important but hard to monetize niches.

One way is to use a service like Patreon to collect money from your supporters. Or you can always use a plugin like PayPal Donations to collect donations directly.

13. Sell consulting or coaching services

If you don't want to be a freelance blogger, another way you can use your blog to sell services is to offer consulting or coaching services. The principle is the same, but you are selling your time instead of writing good content. Basically, you use your blog content to validate your experience and then monetize it with consultations.

14. Sell leads to other companies

If you have a specialized blog, information about your visitors will be valuable to other companies. For example, if you blog about insurance... insurance companies will be happy to pay for access to your readers' information.

The information for each reader is called a "lead". And as long as you are transparent about it, you can collect this information and sell it to other companies. Essentially, you are associating a stakeholder (lead) with a company that matches their needs… for a fee, of course.

15. Create a message board

If you have a large audience of people who are interested in a particular topic, you can use that audience to create a message board in your niche. You can then charge companies to post job ads for your target audience.

One of the best examples of this is the ProBlogger message board. Companies looking for freelance bloggers pay ProBlogger money just for the privilege of posting a job posting.

16. Sell products through e-commerce

If your blog's audience is casual rather than business-oriented, you can make good money selling physical products through an eCommerce store. For example, blogs with a focus on humor and entertainment are most likely to buy clothes.

17. Sell your blog

And finally, this brings us to the core version of how to make money with a blog:

Selling my blog.

If you're at a point where you just want to get paid right away (or if you think you'll reach that point in the future), selling your blog will allow you to get one big lump sum for all the hard work you've put into it.

How much can you expect from your blog? It depends entirely on your traffic, age, income and persistence. But in general… you can earn 12 to 30 times what your site earns each month.

For example, The popular WordPress blog WPLift sold for a whopping $205,200 in 2016.

As far as where to sell your blog, you can either try to find buyers directly or use a third party marketplace.

Let's summarize

And so! 17 effective ways to make money blogging. Not all of them apply to your specific situation, but you are free to mix and match them to create a diversified monetization stream.

If you rely on one method of making money online, you put yourself at risk if, for example, that source of income ever stops working. But if you're, say, promoting affiliate products, running AdSense/YAN ads, running an e-course, running a podcast all at the same time, then it's going to be hard for you to lose all your income overnight! So you can make money on the blog, and not worry about the risks.
