Debian setup - setup guide.

Debian 9.1 setup detailed guide – Based on the analytics of the metrics of your site. I have found that many users do not know how to set up Debian 9.1 properly. Debian setup is not needed in my case, because hosting panel VestaCp, is installed exclusively on clean operating system for home server for a clean install and avoid problems on the server. But it is necessary to make the minimum network settings first.

I am publishing the article, only to help users, in the correct order, to perform the necessary settings for Debian 9.1. To ensure the correct and productive performance of the system. You will be able to intelligently update system components and software. Install the latest extension packs and necessary programs.
Many users have problems with configuring Debian 9.1 - this is due to a violation of the sequence of actions in the system setup. Check out this article, it will definitely help you. Let's go straight to the guide.

The content of the article:

Network settings through the interfaces file

Properly configuring a Debian network involves editing the interfaces file, which contains the basic network settings. The method allows you to save the changes made, even after a system reboot. You can open it with an editor in sudo mode. If you need to install sudo, enter the following commands in the console:

apt-get install sudo adduser your login on the sudo system

Then reboot the system.

To open the interfaces file, enter one of the suggested commands. Here is the difference in the editors, you can view the file in both and choose the editor that suits you.

sudu gedit /etc/network/interfaces sudo mcedit /etc/network/interfaces

An open configuration file, we bring it to the following form: (my comments do not need to be copied)

Debian network setup configuration.

Save the network settings with the following command:

/etc/init.d/networking restart

The restart command restarts the network. Additionally, you can check the installed ip in the system with the command:

ifconfig

Set hostname

To check the current hostname specified in the system parameters, use the command:

hostname

You can change the information in the following file, if necessary, write the necessary host name in it:

mcedit /etc/hostname

Add hostname for example: debian9.1

We organize the correct connection between the ip address and the host name. Let's establish connectivity through the following file:

mcedit /ets/hosts

Save changes:

/etc/init.d/hostname.sh

Specify DNS servers

Specify the latest configuration parameters to complete the network setup. Let's change the following file:

mcedit /etc/resolv.conf - specify the necessary DNS servers in it as follows: nameserver 192.168.1.1 - if necessary, you can specify Yandex and Google public servers.

If the installation assumes the presence of the “resolvconf” program, you can check it with the command:

dpkg -l | grep resolvevconf

If there is no response in the console, then the program is not installed. If it is present in the system, you can additionally add lines with dns servers to the end of the interfaces file settings. Save all network settings again:

systemctl restart networking

I recommend rebooting the system to fully apply the necessary changes. It should be borne in mind that these are not all the settings that can be performed, but only the most necessary ones.

Specifying repositories for Debian 9.1

Debian 9.1 comes with free software repositories. The update in this case may not occur correctly. Let's make changes to the resource file and write the official repositories into it.

Next, open the sources.list file:

mcedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Let's bring the file to the following form:

Setting up the Debian repositories.

The basic setup of Debian 9.1 is complete, all that remains is to update the system and install additional software.

Update system files and programs

Debian 9.1 stretch update, is carried out by a similar method of entering a command in the console. The importance of updating the system is the key to: performance, security and overall relevance of the OS. All necessary commands are run through the superuser:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get update

Debian apt-get upgrade.

Debian apt-get update.

Installing programs on debian

I don't know exactly what programs you need. Next, I will tell you what I installed myself. To a greater extent, this will be useful to users when creating a server.
Installing the Putty program for remote access to the server:

sudo apt-get install putty

Installing Google Chrome Internet Browser for Debian 9.1:

wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add - sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d /google-chrome.list' sudo apt-get update

These three commands perform several actions at once. They fix the key in the system, download the official repository and update the system files. Let's install the stable version of Google:

sudo apt-get install google-chrome-stable

Installing SSH on Debian 9.1:

sudo apt-get install openssh-server service ssh start

Installing an ssh server is done only if necessary. Let's say if you did not add ssh server to the list of components when installing the system.

Conclusion

You now know how to do the basic setup of a Debian 9 system yourself. I would like to note that these are not all the settings that I touched. Eg:

  • Adjust the power supply, especially if you are installing the server on a laptop.
  • For games though doubtful) download drivers for video cards.
  • Adjust system time.
  • Let's say you work with the site on the server. In this case, you can download packages with graphic editors for images, etc.

For those putting VestaCp on Debian, it's worth looking into. System settings in this case are not required. I wish you successful practice, I tried to indicate all the most important in this article. Do not judge strictly.

Does this setting apply to Debian 10 and Debian 11? I have to try, I tried it on ke 9, but 10 and 11 are interesting.

In theory, they should be suitable for both 10 and 11 versions of Debian to be tested.
